RFID was first developed during World War Two and first used by the Allied Forces to keep track of their aircraft.

In 1999, the MIT AutoID Center was formed to develop a commercial standard for RFID and the EPC or Electronic Product Code was developed.

Following this development, the EPCglobal organization was formed in order to introduce this new standard on a worldwide basis.

In 2006 the EPC standard was ratified by ISO the International Standards Organization under the ISO 18000 standard.
